Volunteer Resources is in the process of rolling out a new volunteer position at our Bickle, Hillcrest, Lyndhurst and University Centres. The Unit Support position places volunteers on one of our units and in the position volunteers will engage in several tasks in support of patients, their families and staff. Specific duties may include:
In this position Volunteers will engage in several tasks in support of patients, their families and staff. Specific duties may/may not include:
- Support patients upon admission (e.g. unpacking clothes, offering a tour, explain hospital services and resources while referring to the patient handbook, etc.);
- Accompanying medically stable patients off the unit to other parts of the hospital and/or to other medical facilities;
- Diversional Activities with patients (e.g. socializing, reading to patients, writing letters, card/board games, listening to music, etc.);
- Meal Support with patients (i.e. unwrap/open food packaging, cutting up food, promoting the use of assistive aides, choosing menus, and feeding low risk patients)
- Personal grooming of patients (i.e. brushing hair, applying nail polish, etc.);
- Support patients upon discharge (e.g. packing, explaining the importance of the Patient Satisfaction Survey, etc.);
- Administrative support (e.g. filing, replenishing forms, photocopying, collecting and distributing mail, Bradma stamping, etc.)
- General beautification of the unit (e.g. tidying reception/lounge areas, seasonal/holiday decorating, etc.)
