Current Opportunities

We are always looking for Unit Support volunteers. In this position, volunteers engage in several tasks in support of patients, their families and staff.  For more information on becoming a Unit Support volunteer, please see our Unit Support Volunteer page.

E.W. Bickle Centre

 

Unit Support

An excellent opportunity for direct patient interaction.

Facilitating integration of newly admitted patients onto the unit (e.g. give tours, help patients unpack and get settled), facilitating social interaction with patients (e.g. one-on-one conversation, card games, board games), making family members feel welcomed (e.g. offer them a book or magazine to read, glass of water), and supporting and assisting staff (filing, answering phones).

 

Monday to Sunday

Wellness Program Support

Participate in the social programs and activities led by Wellness Partner staff whose goal is to assist the individual to maximize independence in leisure, optimal health and the highest quality of life. These are hospital wide programs eg. Coffee House, Women’s Group, Active Games, Sit and be-fit, Creative Corner (crafts) and Current Events.

Socialization Support

Enrich the quality of life for patients through activities that promote socialization. Volunteer provides one-on-one companionship with designated patients.  Duties may include computer training, stimulation for special care patients and assist with promotion of daily living skills (e.g. engage in recreation/leisure activities with patient and Therapeutic Recreationist, such as watching TV, reading, playing cards, writing letters etc).

Palliative Care Volunteer

Assist in creating a compassionate and comfortable environment for patients and their families. Volunteers visit and provide support to patients and family members, assist staff, run errands for patients and assist with new admissions.

Chaplaincy Support

Piano Player: Experienced piano player to play at our Sunday service and assist with escorting patients to and from service.

Hymn Sing and Weekly Service: Assist chaplaincy programs by escorting patients to and from program, assist patients during program, help with set up and clean up of program, support chaplaincy staff in creating a calm and safe environment during service.

Gift Shop Attendant

A small shop that is open to patients, visitors and staff that is run entirely by volunteers. Proceeds from the shop are used to fund various programs and benefit the patients.  Duties include: display merchandise in a attractive manner and ensure that seasons and special days are acknowledged, respond to requests from customers to stock specific merchandise when feasible and/or possible, etc.

Patient Education Sessions

Assist the Patient Education Coordinators to run workshops for Spinal Cord patients covering many subjects relating to SCI.  (This position can also be paired with the Unit Support placement on Thursdays.)

Dining Room Support

Dining Room Volunteers are required to assist dietary staff with feeding assigned, low-risk patients, during regular meal times.  Volunteers will receive general training on approved feeding techniques and swallowing disorders.

Pet Visitation

Provide patients with an opportunity to interact with and receive companionship.

Applicants must be approved volunteers of the Therapeutic Paws of Canada or St John’s Ambulance Pet Therapy Program.

Rumsey Centre

 

Exercise Training

Assist the Cardiac Rehab Exercise team and patients during Exercise classes. Ideal for applicants who have a kinesiology or exercise training background.

University Centre

 

Unit Support Team Leader

Provide ongoing leadership, support and mentoring for the Unit Support Volunteers.

Responsibilities (may and/or may not include):

  • Foster a welcoming, positive, safe and supportive relationship with unit support volunteers
  • Communicate and problem-solve with the staff contact, meeting together regularly
  • Create and monitor weekly unit support schedule
  • Keep communication binder up-to-date
  • Set up a buddy system between seasoned and new volunteers
  • Act as mentor to unit support volunteers and develop their leadership abilities
  • Assist Consultant, Volunteer Resources with training of new volunteers
  • Identify volunteer and program needs

Plan and organize placement meetings, activities and education/education sheets for volunteers in conjunction with staff contact and Volunteer Resources

 

Monday to Saturday
Once or twice per week for 4 hrs (total)

Pet Therapy (dogs with owners)

A direct service provided by trained volunteers and pets.  Pets must display a temperament conducive to the hospital environment: confidence, good manners and sociability with other pets and people.

Applicants must be approved volunteers of the Therapeutic Paws of Canada or St John’s Ambulance Pet Therapy Program.

Art Therapy Support

The role of the Art Therapy Assistant is to support a Therapeutic Recreationist in facilitating a weekly art group.  In the Art Therapy Program, patients explore their creativity, practice new skills and improve social interaction.  Due to the variety of patient needs, a “hands on” experiential approach to art is followed, rather than any specific curriculum. 

We are specifically recruiting for those with a strong background in visual arts.
