Patrick McCarthy remembers the moment when numbness descended.
Walking his dog at a favourite park, he suddenly lost feeling in his face. He desperately tried to speak to a neighbour but couldn’t utter a word. McCarthy, 51, had suffered not one but a series of strokes that affected both sides of his brain. What worried the public relations professional most was the effect on his speech.
”If you’re a communicator and you can’t talk, that’s serious,” he says. “It was my bread and butter.”

About the Communication Research Team
The Communication Research Team is investigating how to improve communication between patients with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers, develop new assistive technologies that aid communication, and find new treatments to improve and restore speech after stroke.
