What does a scholarship provide?
Recipients receive an award of $20,000. The next round of scholarships will cover the period of September 2008 to August 2009. Scholarships may be renewed based on satisfactory performance, and if funds are available.The scholarship also provides an individual supplement to help meet special disability-related costs of attending graduate school. This supplement provides funding for educational expenses that are incurred as a result of the student’s disability.
The scholarship is open to students in good standing who show evidence of ambition to pursue a career in rehabilitation-related research.
Applicants must:
- Have a disability*;
- Plan to be enrolled in a rehabilitation-related graduate program leading to a masters or doctoral degree at one of the eligible universities**:
- McMaster University
- Ryerson University
- University of Toronto
- University of Waterloo
- Wilfrid Laurier University
- York University
- Be supervised by an investigator at Toronto Rehab*** who is appointed to the School of Graduate Studies at one of the eligible universities.
* A disability is defined as a physical or cognitive impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
** Scholarship offers will be made subject to the applicant’s acceptance and enrolment into an appropriate program at one of the eligible universities. Because the Scholarship Committee works closely with Scholarship recipients to support their success, all applicants must be located within the vicinity of the eligible universities.
*** Recipients must be supervised by an investigator at Toronto Rehab who is appointed to the School of Graduate Studies at one of the six eligible universities. If a candidate currently has a supervisor who is not affiliated with Toronto Rehab, the supervisor will need to apply for an adjunct appointment at Toronto Rehab.

Fields of study must relate to rehabilitation but are not limited to any particular discipline. Fields of study may include but are not limited to:

Is the scholarship open to international students?
Yes, applications are encouraged from international students. International students must be admitted to one of the eligible universities through their normal academic procedures. You should contact the eligible university of your choice immediately to determine its procedures, requirements, and deadline dates, and for information on requirements for a Study Permit and Temporary Resident Visa.
Please note that all applicants must be proficient in both written and spoken English. Applicants whose primary language is not English and who graduated from a non-Canadian university where the language of instruction and examination was not English must meet the English Facility requirements of the university to which they are applying.
How many scholarships are awarded?
The number of awards depends on the quality of the individual applications and the funds available.
Can I apply for other scholarships?
Students are encouraged to apply to other organizations that provide academic and disability-related funding. Students who receive support from other sources will be eligible to apply for supplementary financial support from this scholarship.
How do I apply for the scholarship?
You must make separate applications for admission to an eligible university and for the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Scholarship in Rehabilitation-related Research for Graduate Students with Disabilities. Candidates may apply for the Scholarship prior to being accepted into graduate studies provided they have applied to a relevant graduate program at one of eligible universities.

When is the scholarship application due?
The scholarship application deadline is May 1, 2008.
How is my application assessed?
Applications are read and evaluated by the Scholarship Committee. Candidates may be called to an interview. When evaluating applications and interviewing candidates, the Scholarship Committee takes into consideration:
- research and academic achievements
- letters of recommendation
- quality of the proposed research
- evidence of ambition to pursue a career in rehabilitation-related research
