As a teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, and with formal associations with close to 40 other academic institutions, Toronto Rehab is committed to developing new knowledge that will make a difference in the lives of people who sustain debilitating illness and injury.

We’re also committed to sharing knowledge – with our own clinicians, with students entering the rehabilitation field and with health care professionals already working in the sector, as well as with patients and families and the broader public. We are constantly searching out innovative approaches to fulfilling our educational commitments, with some exciting results.

Interprofessional Education
Toronto Rehab has led the way with interprofessional education (IPE), an educational model that brings together students from different health care professions to learn how to work effectively in teams to better serve patients in their care. Since 2004 we have organized 29 IPE Placements involving 16 different professions.

As an acknowledged leader in IPE, Toronto Rehab consults with other Toronto teaching hospitals to guide the development and adoption of interprofessional education. Our IPE leaders are sought-after speakers nationally and internationally and key partners with the University of Toronto as it moves forward with its plans to incorporate this new model of educating health professionals into its core health programs.

Student Numbers and Satisfaction
Each year, we see close to 1,000 students at some point during their journey to become health care professionals. Our clinical staff devotes more than 130,000 hours each year to educating nurses, doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists amongst a long list of other clinical specialists. Of those who are with us for 10 days or more on a clinical educational placement, over 95% of them would recommend Toronto Rehab to other students considering a placement with us.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Toronto Rehab is a major provider of ongoing professional development for health care providers already working in the rehabilitation field. Each year, the hospital hosts a dozen or more educational events ranging in scope and scale from small hands-on workshops to major international conferences. The events attract, on average, about 2,000 health care professionals a year and are highly rated by attendees.
