Specialized spinal cord injury rehabilitation

  • Toronto Rehab’s Spinal Cord Rehab Program is the oldest rehabilitation program in North America dedicated to traumatic spinal cord injuries and non-traumatic diseases of the spinal cord. It is also the largest inpatient program of its kind in Canada. With this legacy comes an unparalleled wealth of experience treating patients with spinal cord conditions and injuries, and helping them to rebuild their lives.
  • Toronto Rehab’s range of patient care programs makes it uniquely suited to manage co-morbidities that are common in patients with spinal cord injuries, such as heart disease, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and cancer.
  • A variety of highly specialized services addressing issues and conditions related to spinal cord injuries are available on-site at Lyndhurst Centre, including:
    • an assistive technologies clinic staffed by a full-time occupational therapist and biomedical engineer
    • a seating clinic, providing pressure mapping, customized prescriptions and access to a skin and wound specialist
    • a bone densitometry laboratory for people with spinal cord injuries, offering expert assessments and recommendations
    • a gynecology clinic that provides routine care for women with mobility impairments in a wheelchair accessible environment
    • the Robson Urology Clinic, staffed by two urologists and providing cystoscopy and ultrasound services in two urodynamic suites
  • Toronto Rehab’s Spinal Cord Rehab Program offers purpose built facilities that are fully accessible. Counters are positioned at a comfortable wheelchair height, for example, and the bone densitometry laboratory offers a ceiling lift.
  • Toronto Rehab incorporates a wide range of specialized equipment in the delivery of its therapies. For example, the on-site fitness centre includes weight machines that are wheelchair accessible and that can accommodate limited hand function.
  • The program includes an extensive therapeutic recreation service that helps patients with spinal cord injuries to explore the multitude of leisure activities that are available to them, with adaptive aids and support. For example, a therapeutic garden is located on-site and an annual cottage/camp program lets patients try new activities and sports, such as canoeing, handcycling and pitching tents.
  • A specialized, interprofessional team of health care practitioners representing more than a dozen disciplines delivers spinal cord rehab. Toronto Rehab employs an interprofessional team approach to care from assessment to discharge.
  • Toronto Rehab’s range of programming and professional partnerships facilitates timely, streamlined access to additional specialty physicians, as necessary.
