Comprehensive spinal cord injury rehabilitation

  • therapyToronto Rehab conducts detailed interprofessional assessments of spinal cord injury patients. Assessments are led by physiatrists, specialists in rehabilitation medicine who are skilled in identifying deficits, creating individualized rehabilitative care plans and making prognoses.
  • A full continuum of care, from inpatient services to outpatient services to follow-up clinics, is available through Toronto Rehab. Patients can enter the program at any point along the continuum of care and progress smoothly through the stages.
  • Specialized on-site services ensure comprehensive rehabilitation treatment. These services include an assistive technologies clinic, a seating clinic, a skin and wound clinic, a bone densitometry lab, a gynecology clinic and a urology clinic.
  • Inpatients receive daily therapy during the week, and if medically appropriate, are eligible for evening and weekend passes to test their new skill sets in the community. Outside of assigned therapy times, patients work closely with staff to practice activities of daily living. Outpatients are scheduled for therapy based on their needs and resource availability.
  • The involvement of physiatrists in care plan implementation facilitates timely reassessments, which optimize the benefits of rehab for each individual patient.
  • The Canadian Paraplegic Association of Ontario is co-located at Lyndhurst Centre. CPA Ontario provides peer support services and an employment resource centre offering employment information, career counselling, job placement, and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) employment support.
  • Toronto Rehab offers a high school classroom on-site so that injured youth can keep up their studies during their inpatient rehabilitation.
  • Toronto Rehab uses a primary nurse program and consistently meets provincial targets for full-time nurse percentages. This ensures patients work with nurses who have specialized skills and maximizes continuity of care and patient safety.
