Specialized musculoskeletal rehabilitation

  • Three separate streams of care for patients with different types of injuries or conditions ensure highly specialized treatment:

    • Trauma Stream: For patients with one or more traumatic musculoskeletal injuries caused by a fall, motor vehicle accident, work-related accident or other event, as well as complications such as peripheral nerve and soft tissue injuries, mild brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and other post-operative complications
    • Complex MSK Stream (Total Joint Replacement and Hip Fracture): For patients who have experienced a joint replacement or non-traumatic fracture, as well as the particularly underserviced population of patients who have conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis or heart conditions who present like patients with hip fractures
    • Oncology Stream: For patients who have cancers related to the musculoskeletal system or whose cancer diagnosis directly impacts their ability to move or carry out activities of daily living
  • A variety of specialty services addressing issues and complications related to musculoskeletal conditions are also available through the program, including:

    • An EMG clinic that supports the appropriate diagnosis and management of peripheral nerve disorders
    • An interprofessional clinic that specializes in treating people who have been in motor vehicle accidents and determines which services will be of most benefit to patients (this clinic supports third party funded individuals)
    • A physiatry clinic specializing in assessing and treating functional limitations related to osteoarthritis, complicated MSK sprains and strains, low back pain, injury and surgery-related trauma
    • A Prevention and Rehabilitation of Osteoporosis Service that offers exercise, education and peer support
  • A specialized, interprofessional team of health care practitioners representing more than a dozen disciplines delivers musculoskeletal rehab. This breadth enables far more comprehensive care than the standard combination of occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Toronto Rehab uses a physiatrist-led interprofessional approach to care from assessment to discharge.
  • Toronto Rehab played a leadership role in the development of the national specialty certification in rehabilitation nursing, and has several certified rehabilitation nurses on staff.
  • The hospital’s range of programming and its many professional partnerships facilitate timely, streamlined access to additional specialty physicians, as necessary.
