Complex Musculoskeletal Service

The impact we place on our hips and knees means these joints tend to wear out as we age. Conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis can accelerate this process. Our Complex Musculoskeletal Service is more than simply hip and knee rehab, we treat patients with significant loss of mobility and movement who are often recovering from total hip or total knee replacement.

Our team has on average three to four weeks to get patients strong enough on their feet to go home. This longer time period reflects the complexity of the patient population, as well as the fact that our patients are typically in their 60s, 70s, and 80s when this type of surgery is necessary.

While at Hillcrest Centre, patients will work with occupational therapists and physiotherapists from Monday to Friday. Patients may also perform some of their therapy in a weightless environment in our heated pool.

Multiple Trauma Rehabilitation

Our multiple trauma service fills a needed gap in trauma services. While we are not the only facility to offer trauma rehabilitation, our service helps to alleviate pressures on Toronto area acute care hospitals. According to Transport Canada, nearly one quarter of motor vehicle accidents result in personal injury. Toronto Rehab cares for the most severely injured people — those who have sustained multiple fractures and other orthopaedic medical conditions.

In addition to requiring occupational therapy, physiotherapy and complex nursing care, some patients may need psychological help to cope with the sudden and life-altering nature of trauma. Our team helps patients return as closely as possible to the life they led prior to injury. On average, patients stay at our hospital for four to five weeks.

Oncology Rehabilitation

While aggressive cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy may save lives, the fight to survive take its toll on the body. Rehab is particularly important for cancer survivors in order to minimize the risk of long-term disability following cancer treatments.

Toronto Rehab offers one of the few dedicated oncology rehabilitation services in Ontario. Our service has been designed for people with cancers associated with the musculoskeletal system such as bone and tissue tumours as well as people who have undergone bone marrow transplants.

Over the course of four to five weeks, our team helps individuals build the necessary strength in their bones and provides them with the confidence they need to walk again or to meet other personal goals. Therapy also focuses on helping patients regain previous levels of functioning in daily living activities, or helping to develop new routines if necessary.

Prevention and Rehabilitation of Osteoporosis (PRO) Service

One in four women and one in eight men over age 50 will get osteoporosis. Weak bones increase the risk of fracture to the wrist, spine, ribs and hip and can result in disfigurement, excruciating pain, loss of mobility and decreased independence.

Toronto Rehab's PRO Service was a pioneer in the use of exercises designed specifically for treatment of the disease. Each year, hundreds of people go through our PRO Service. The outpatient-based classes incorporate postural, aerobic, and strengthening exercises as well as education focusing on osteoporosis care.

Osteoporosis risk factors:

Post-menopausal
Family history of the disease
Lack of physical exercise
Excessive use of certain medications e.g. thyroid medications, cortisone, anti-convulsants

A doctor's referral is required for this service. For more information call 416-597-3422, ext. 3005.
