FAQs for Referring Professionals

Patients and Families

Are there semi-private or private rooms available?
Yes, there are a limited number of semi-private and private rooms available at Hillcrest Centre. You may wish to confirm with your insurance company that it will pay for preferred accommodation in a rehabilitation facility

Is long-term patient parking available?
Unfortunately, our parking lot is too small to permit inpatients to leave cars there while seeking treatment at Hillcrest Centre. Parking is available, though, for visitors and for outpatients. The parking rate is $5 a day.

Can I prevent getting osteoporosis?
Some people are more susceptible to osteoporosis than others. To lower your risk, eat a well balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, exercise regularly, limit your caffeine intake, and don't smoke. You may also wish to speak with your doctor about a bone mineral density test or preventive medication if you are at high risk.

How are patients prepared for discharge home?

You will be encouraged, if appropriate, to return home for a weekend prior to discharge. This will provide you with an opportunity to practice the skills that you have learned in therapy and to identify any potential problems.

The team will assist you with the discharge planning process, and when necessary, recommend follow-up treatment and services. The discharge planner and social worker are available if you need assistance with any special arrangements for your discharge.

Does therapy end on discharge?
Many of our patients continue with therapy in their home, with help from community agencies and from family and friends. Other patients may decide to return to our program, or a similar program closer to home, on an outpatient basis.

Referring Professionals

Is there a waiting list for services?
Due to the quick turnover of our beds we do not usually have a waiting list. Please contact the admissions coordinator for more information.

Is a medical referral required?
Yes, all of our services require a medical referral. Please complete the standard OHA referral forms for rehabilitation.

What therapy services are available to patients at Hillcrest Centre?
We provide intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy to patients as well as hydrotherapy. Our social worker may also work closely with some patients to address the psychosocial aspects of their injury. Outside of scheduled therapy, patients may work closely with nursing staff to practice many daily living activities. Our clinical team also includes pharmacy, nutritional services, advanced practice leaders, discharge planners, physiatry, and medical consultants. The MSK Program also has access to the services provided at our other Toronto Rehab sites such as chiropody clinics, dentistry, and eye clinics.

What is the average length of stay?
Generally, patients spend three to four weeks in our Complex Musculoskeletal Service and from four to five weeks in either of our Oncology or Multiple Trauma services.
