Living with musculoskeletal conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer of the bone, and trauma sustained from events such as a car crash can be painful and affect a person's movement, mobility and quality of life. Rehabilitation plays an integral role in helping people get up and going again after a hip or knee replacement surgery or after painful and invasive cancer treatments.

Toronto Rehab’s Musculoskeletal Rehab Program provides a full continuum of care including inpatient, outpatient and specialty services, as well as follow-up clinics. The program has been designed to allow patients to enter at any point along the care continuum and to transition smoothly between services based on individual need.

The program offers highly specialized treatment through separate streams of care for patients with different types of musculoskeletal injuries or conditions. The different streams provide designated care for patients who:

• have total joint replacements, fractured hips (including those that suffer from cognitive impairment), arthritic conditions, diabetes, osteoporosis or heart conditions that limit their mobility (Complex MSK Service)
• have suffered a serious fracture or extensive injuries due to a motor vehicle accident or a fall (Multiple Trauma Service)
• have cancer of the bone and surrounding tissues (Oncology Service)

A variety of specialty services addressing issues and complications related to musculoskeletal conditions are also available through the program, including:

• an interprofessional clinic that specializes in treating people who have been in motor vehicle accidents and determines which services will be of most benefit to patients (this clinic supports third party funded individuals)
• a physiatry clinic that assesses and treats functional limitations related to osteoarthritis, sprains and strains, back pain, injury and surgery-related trauma
• an electromyography (EMG) clinic that diagnoses and manages peripheral nerve disorders
• a Prevention and Rehabilitation of Osteoporosis (PRO) Service that offers exercise, education and peer support

An interprofessional team of health care experts representing more than a dozen different disciplines delivers rehab treatment. Because the effects of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions affect people in many different ways, the Musculoskeletal Rehab Program delivers individualized treatment to meet each patient’s needs and goals. Patients’ family members are encouraged to participate in the patient’s therapy whenever possible. Patient and family education is a critical component of the rehabilitation process at Toronto Rehab.

Toronto Rehab is committed to helping patients transition successfully from hospital to the community through the coordination of homecare and other services. Before discharge, Toronto Rehab works in partnership with families and community care organizations to ensure the necessary supports are in place outside of the hospital to help patients maintain the gains they made during rehab and to continue improving on their own. Many inpatients continue therapy with Toronto Rehab on an outpatient basis after discharge.
