Toronto Rehab's Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Program at Lyndhurst Centre offers the largest rehabilitation program in the country for people who have experienced trauma to the spinal cord either as a result of injury or disease. Patients are admitted from acute care hospitals, or from their home, from across Ontario, Canada and the world.

All inpatients undergo an interprofessional assessment and are provided an estimated length of stay during their first week of admission. Individualized treatment therapy and discharge plans are then developed. Patients are expected to play an active role in their rehabilitation. With the team's guidance and support, patients are encouraged to rebuild their lives through treatment, specialized therapy and counselling. The ultimate goal is to help patients become as independent as possible so they can get back to work or school and life in their community. Referrals to outpatient services, community service providers and support groups such as the Canadian Paraplegic Association are made prior to discharge.

Admission Criteria

Diagnosis of acute spinal cord injury resulting from trauma or non-traumatic causes and diseases
Medical and surgical stability
Require an integrated specialized rehabilitation program
Physically and psychologically capable and willing to participate in all aspects of the program
16 years of age or older
A patient meeting the above criteria may be re-admitted because of potential to improve/resolve ongoing problems associated with spinal cord injury
Has an appropriate discharge plan
An agreement that, in the event that the program is unable to meet the patient's needs or the patient cannot be discharged to the community upon completion of the program, the referring facility will re-admit the patient
Specific patients may be admitted who do not meet all of the above criteria at the discretion of the admitting physician
