Toronto Rehab's
Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, one of the largest of its kind in
North America, treats close to 1,600 people each year who are recovering
from various forms of heart disease and/or surgery.
The goals of
the program are to prevent and limit the physiological and psychological
effects of cardiac illness, and to improve overall cardiovascular
fitness and health. The program's staff accomplish this by developing
individualized programs of exercise, education and lifestyle modification
that are tailored to individual needs and abilities.
Facilities include:
two 200-metre walk/jog tracks - one indoor and one outdoor
a gymnasium for pre-class
warm-up and resistance training classes
two
Human Performance Labs for fitness testing
a 120-seat lecture
hall for patient education
men's and women's
change rooms |
Program Highlights:
| |
Extensive
cardiopulmonary assessments are conducted in the Human Performance
Lab. Test results allow us to develop safe and effective exercise
training programs for each patient. |
| |
Physician
supervised exercise classes. Each class consists of a lecture,
followed by the patient's prescribed exercise. Patients must
participate in at least one supervised class a week and exercise
at home four more times per week. |
| |
A lecture series helps patients and their families better understand
heart disease and the rehabilitation process. Presentations
cover topics related to coronary heart disease, exercise physiology,
risk factors, nutrition and psychosocial issues. |
| |
Risk
factor intervention. |
| |
The
program is offered on an outreach basis to people who live outside
of the Greater Toronto Area and who are unable to regularly
attend supervised exercise classes. |

myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass surgery, angioplasty,

As
part of the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Program,
the Diabetes Exercise and Healthy Lifestyle Service helps people
with diabetes lower their risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
It is estimated that 80% of individuals with diabetes will
die as a result of cardiovascular disease.
A
team of physicians, exercise specialists, dieticians, social workers
and psychologists help adults living with diabetes to improve their
strength, fitness, glycemic control and overall quality of life.
