Course Description
This intermediate-advanced 2-day workshop takes a physiological and evidence-based approach to exploring clinical and videofluoroscopic assessments of oropharyngeal swallowing physiology as tools for intervention planning. Participants will consider several case scenarios, and critically evaluate assessment and treatment options based on consideration of clinical signs and interactive practice rating videofluoroscopy recordings. Current evidence for the selection of specific rehabilitative treatment options for dysphagia will be discussed, and manometric and electromyographic biofeedback options will be demonstrated. Examples and case scenarios will primarily feature adults with acquired neurogenic dysphagia, however extension to pediatric caseloads or clients with structurally-related or oncology-related dysphagia will be explored pending audience interest.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will review current evidence regarding the neurophysiology of oropharyngeal swallowing.
- Participants will critically evaluate the steps involved in clinical assessment of oropharyngeal swallowing physiology, and apply this to the design and discussion of several different scase scenarios.
- Participants will understand the indications and contra-indications for using videofluoroscopy as an instrumental procedure for evaluating oropharyngeal swallowing physiology;
- Participants will critically evaluate the steps involved in the videofluoroscopy procedure and apply this to the design of a standardized core protocol for use in their workplace.
- Participants will apply their standardized videofluoroscopy protocol to case scenarios, identifying appropriate compensatory manoeuvres to be trialled and considering the need for customization of the protocol to the patient.
- Participants will practice rating oropharyngeal swallowing physiology from videofluoroscopy recordings for several cases, and will be able to benchmark their own identification and severity ratings against those of the instructor and other participants.
- Participants will critically evaluate the implications of videofluoroscopy findings for treatment planning.
- Participants will understand the rationale and current evidence behind the use of manometric and electromyographic equipment for biofeedback in oropharyngeal swallowing rehabilitation. Equipment demonstration will be provided.
- Participants will critically evaluate current evidence behind rehabilitative approaches to oropharyngeal swallowing treatment and apply this to case scenarios.
