Planned Giving
Creating a brighter future
Our donors are able to help in so many ways. But planned gifts – donations that are arranged now to provide funds for the future – help Toronto Rehab ensure its services, research and education help generations of patients and their families.
A planned gift:
- allows you to increase your giving while substantially reducing your income tax
- is a gift that is made from your assets, and not from your current income
- involves legal documentation, for example a bequest in your will, a life insurance policy, or an annuity agreement
- is a gift that you make after careful consideration and advice from financial/legal and estate planning professionals
There are many different ways to make a planned gift to Toronto Rehab:
- Securities
- Property
- Bequests
- Life insurance
- Real Estate or Personal Property
For more information about planned giving or to inform us of your bequest intentions, please contact the Foundation at 416-597-3040 or foundation@torontorehab.on.ca.
Real Estate or Personal Property
A donation of real estate or personal property is another valuable way to make a planned gift.
For real estate, you may be able to eliminate the expenses of owning property, while receiving a tax receipt for its fair market value. An independent third party must appraise other personal property with a value greater than $5000 to ensure that you receive the most appropriate tax benefit. The Toronto Rehab Foundation Board of Directors will approve all gifts of real estate or personal property.
Benefits of donating property:
- Toronto Rehab Foundation will issue you a tax receipt for the appraised market value of your property.
- Immediate tax receipts can offset the tax you pay on income and other capital gains.
- For gifts classified as Canadian cultural property (such as Canadian art), you may apply the tax receipt against 100% of your net annual income in the year of the gift, with no capital gains tax to pay.
- If your gift is your principle residence, the capital gain is not taxed. For other real estate 66 2/3 percent of the gain will be taxable. The tax credit will exceed the tax on the gain, resulting in a greater tax savings.
