Patient Stories - Elton Horner

Complex continuing care saves life. Just ask Elton Horner.
When Elton Horner was admitted to Toronto Rehab’s complex continuing care program, he needed not only physical, but emotional healing. Having lived with quadriplegia since 1983, Elton needed special attention for his 10 pressure ulcers, commonly known as bed sores.
“I wasn’t getting any better, and everything was getting me down,” he recalls. “But once I got to Toronto Rehab, I saw immediate progress. That just lifted me from day one. The better I got, the more I wanted to get better.”
Elton’s treatment involved the diligent application of wound care best practices from a highly skilled team of Toronto Rehab staff. Elton is left with a lasting impression of what they did for him.
“They just went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable, and that I learned everything I had to know to stay well.”
After seven months, with all but two of his ulcers healed, Elton was able to return home. Thanks to what he learned at Toronto Rehab, he’s confident he can stay on top of his health challenges in the future.
“Being at Toronto Rehab was a learning process that will stick with me,” he says. “Now I’m in control. But at the same time, I know I can always go back and talk to them anytime I need to. That’s the kind of place it is."
One in two of us will be touched by disability. At Toronto Rehab, we’re revolutionizing rehabilitation, because rehabilitation saves life.
