Chair's Council Reception

On November 22, 2010 over 100 guests joined hosts Tim Casgrain, Toronto Rehab Foundation’s Board Chair, and Mark Rochon, Toronto Rehab’s President and CEO, Deep Underground at Toronto Rehab’s University Centre for our Chair’s Council Reception.

After informative and engaging tours of new subterranean iDAPT facilities by Toronto Rehab’s proud research staff, guests gathered in the Challenging Environment Assessment Laboratory (CEAL) for demonstrations and remarks by Mark Rochon and Dr. Geoff Fernie, Vice President of Research. Introduced with a video showing delivery and set up of CEAL simulator components, Mark and Geoff were raised from the laboratory bay on a scissor lift to deliver their presentation. One highlight was a figure skating demonstration that was filmed live and projected for all to see the effective way in which the cold-weather pod can replicate winter conditions.

CEAL features the world’s first hydraulic motion simulator that can mimic everyday environmental challenges faced by older people and those with disabling illness and injury. The simulator has different chambers that can be lifted on and off the base to generate snow and ice, different motions, slopes and terrain.

As guests arrived at the event, they were greeted in the front lobby with a special performance by former patient and international musician, Donald Quan. In August 2010 Mr. Quan had a near fatal heart arrhythmia while performing a concert in Kitchener, Ontario. It was in rehab that his music and creative abilities returned. To express his gratitude, he has created an album, 17 Minutes of Silence, to support Toronto Rehab. CDs can be purchased by contacting Tanya Yan at 416-597-3422 ext. 3965.

The Chair’s Council is comprised of former members of the Foundation and Hospital Boards who meet annually to thank our donors and to share in the achievements of Toronto Rehab in pursuing its new vision to Revolutionize rehabilitation – maximize life!
