Home Lab

This “home within a lab” will provide a setting where researchers can create and test new tools to help older people and those with disabilities stay at home longer and more safely. The Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab - HomeLab will resemble a typical single-storey dwelling. With functional plumbing and wiring, people will be able to occupy the living space and test innovations. An overhead catwalk and suspended grid will enable devices, such as overhead lifts and ceiling-mounted monitoring systems, to be tested. The lab will be used to study the challenges people face in their homes and to test artificial intelligence and other approaches that support aging in place. Research will also focus on easing the burden on family caregivers.

The HomeLab will be located on the 12th floor of Toronto Rehab’s University Centre at 550 University Ave., Toronto. It is scheduled to open in November 2011.
