Strategic Policy and Research Communications (SPARC)
Knowledge translation involves building bridges. Call it sparking connections between research and those who use research findings, including clinicians and decision-makers. The ultimate goal: to get findings into practice —and to enhance people’s lives.
In 2006, Toronto Rehab created a special unit to identify and respond to opportunities for knowledge translation between our researchers and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The Strategic Policy and Research Communication (SPARC) unit provides decision makers with ready access to our extraordinary range of research projects, findings and expertise.
SPARC also puts into action research projects directly requested by the Ministry. Each year we assemble small research teams to work on priority issues within the health care system. Examples include a study on the use of sleep lab tests in Ontario. Another Ministry-directed study looked at the challenging issue of patients occupying beds in acute care while they wait for long-term care beds. This work provides much-needed research evidence to help inform decision-making.
SPARC works to translate research in other ways too, such as coordinating research events and promoting collaboration between researchers.
