Oncology (Cancer) Rehab Service

New cancer treatments are saving lives and bringing new hope.

But treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy can take a toll on people’s bodies. And while only a few cancers begin in the bones, many cancers eventually spread there.

Individuals may experience pain and lose the strength they need for day-to-day activities. Their physical abilities and mobility may be affected. Cancer in the bone may cause fractures.

Maximizing Life and Restoring Independence

Rehabilitation for cancer patients is still an emerging field. Toronto Rehab has one of Ontario’s only specialized oncology (cancer) rehabilitation services.

We help individuals who have a significant loss of strength, function, movement or mobility as a result of:
  • bone cancers of the hip, pelvis or spine

  • bone marrow transplants

  • cancers such as colon, breast, bladder, lung, prostate, lymphomas, leukemia, sarcoma or multiple myeloma.

We help people to recover their abilities and to find ways to adapt to any disabilities or limitations that remain. We help them regain their independence so that they can live their lives to the fullest.

Exceptional Individualized Therapy Promotes Recovery

Our interprofessional health care team works with individuals and their families to develop an individualized treatment plan that meets their needs and goals.

Therapy may include a combination of physical and occupational therapy as well as complex nursing care. Patients have daily therapy sessions with up to three or four specialized therapists, depending on their needs.

Patients may also receive support and counselling from a social worker to help them deal with psychological issues associated with cancer and its impact.

The average length of stay in hospital is four to five weeks.
