Fibromyalgia Group

Approximately 1.2 million Canadians have fibromyalgia, the most common cause of chronic pain.

Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain and interferes with every aspect of someone’s life. A debilitating condition, it causes fatigue, problems with concentration and memory, sleep disturbances and psychological distress.

Practical Approaches to Maximize Life

At Toronto Rehab, we help people manage their chronic pain so they can maximize life.

We offer a self-management approach combined with group meetings and peer support. While we can’t make pain and the symptoms of fibromyalgia go away (and we don’t change medication), we can help people manage it more effectively. We provide common sense strategies that people can use in their daily lives.

We are the only hospital in the Toronto area to offer this type of group-based cognitive behavioural program for fibromyalgia.

Group Model Highly Effective

Our fibromylagia groups run for eight weeks, meeting one half-day a week. Peer support is an important component of the program—participants support and learn from each other.

Members of our interprofessional team facilitate the sessions. Participants will learn:
  • about fibromyalgia

  • how to use good body mechanics to reduce pain

  • practical tips for enhancing quality of life

  • strategies for managing the emotional impact of living with fibromylagia

  • a gentle exercise routine both in class and in the therapeutic pool

Additional groups are also available to assist with related issues such as managing anger and stress.

A physician referral is necessary to participate in this program.
