Chronic Pain Groups

Chronic pain can be devastating. It affects all parts of a person’s life—daily activities, work, family life and sleep. It can make it difficult to think and concentrate. Anxiety and depression can result.

Practical Approaches to Maximize Life

At Toronto Rehab, we help people manage their chronic pain so they can maximize life.

We offer a self-management approach combined with group meetings and peer support.  While we can’t make pain go away (and we don’t change medication), we can help people manage it more effectively.

We provide common sense strategies that people can use in their daily lives. We help them become aware of how their body reacts to physical and mental stress and how to handle these situations better.

Group Model Highly Effective

Our pain management groups run for 10 weeks. Sessions take place two half-days a week.  The groups are made up of eight to 14 members who have similar chronic pain issues. Peer support is an important component of the program—participants support and learn from each other.

Members of our interprofessional team facilitate the sessions.

The groups incorporate a variety of components to assist in pain management:
  • education and practical strategies

  • body awareness and relaxation training

  • peer support

  • gentle exercise in our therapeutic pool

  • self-directed learning between sessions

Additional groups are also available to assist with related issues such as managing anger and stress.

A physician referral is necessary to participate in this program.
