Multiple Sclerosis

Maximizing Life for People with Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological disease. And, for reasons researchers have yet to discover, Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world. Approximately 75,000 Canadians are affected.

Life with multiple sclerosis can be very challenging. It can affect vision, hearing, memory and concentration, balance and mobility. Symptoms are unpredictable and change over time. But, rehabilitation can help.

Toronto Rehab—Maximizing Life

At Toronto Rehab, we provide a full range of rehabilitation services for individuals with multiple sclerosis.

We help people learn how to adapt to their disease and manage their own health. We help them maintain or recover their physical and mental abilities as much as possible. We help them to remain independent—and maximize life.

Multiple sclerosis affects each person differently and our care reflects that. Our interprofessional health care team works with individuals and their families to develop an individualized treatment plan that meets their needs and goals. We focus on superior outcomes for each and every patient.

Promoting Health and Wellness

Our Multiple Sclerosis Service helps people develop the knowledge and practical skills they need to manage their disease day-to-day. Our health promotion programs include:
  • Life with MS – facilitated group sessions that support problem-solving and learning from each other

  • Fitness Classes – to help people maintain their mobility and manage their stress and fatigue

  • It’s Your Choice Exercises – a Toronto Rehab exercise DVD that allows people to maintain a regular exercise routine at home

Toronto Rehab has also established a unique partnership with the City of Toronto to expand exercise options for individuals with MS, stroke and brain injury. TIME – Together In Movement and Exercise, is an exercise program designed by Toronto Rehab physiotherapists and delivered by fitness instructors in community centres across the city.

Maximizing Function and Independence

At Toronto Rehab, we help people with multiple sclerosis to live as independently and safely as possible.

Cognitive or physical challenges are addressed through specialized inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Individuals learn how to manage their fatigue to reduce their risk of falls and improve their quality of life. We also work with individuals to help them adapt their home environments to accommodate any limitations they have as a result of their disease.

Multiple sclerosis symptoms may change over time. Our health care team helps individuals develop the skills to adapt to these changes and manage them appropriately.

Integrating Research with Care

At Toronto Rehab, we integrate the latest research into all the care we provide. Our researchers work side by side with the health care team. Our patients participate in research and benefit from discoveries—as we make them. We’re also sharing our innovations with rehabilitation providers across the country and around the world

Exercise DVD helps people with MS stay fit

Toronto Rehab's multiple sclerosis service has released a new exercise DVD called It's Your Choice Exercises for fitness and well-being for individuals with Multiple Sclerosis. The DVD features a flexible 15 to 45 minute workout at three different levels of difficulty to suit individual needs and schedules.

It's Your Choice was made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from Serono Canada, and was produced by the generous and talented team at q media solutions.
