Long Course Rehab
Rehabilitation at a Slower Pace
Successful rehabilitation requires people to push their limits. As a result, most rehabilitation is “high intensity”—several hours each day over several weeks.
However, patients who are older or who have complex health issues may not be able to participate in rehabilitation at that intensity. Low Tolerance Long Duration (LTLD) rehabilitation provides a successful alternative.
Toronto Rehab—Maximizing Life
At Toronto Rehab, we specialize in Low Tolerance Long Duration rehabilitation for patients with complex medical needs.
We help individuals recover their strength and their abilities. We help them regain their independence so they can live their lives to the fullest. We maximize life.
In fact, 75 per cent of patients who receive Low Tolerance Long Duration rehabilitation at Toronto Rehab are able to return to living independently in their homes.
Individualized Care for Better Outcomes
Low Tolerance Long Duration rehabilitation is for people who will benefit from rehabilitation at a slower pace and with less intensity. Often they have multiple medical issues (such as diabetes and heart disease) in addition to the injury or illness that led to their hospitalization.
Our Low Tolerance Long Duration Rehabilitation Program has two streams:
-
Neuro-Physical Stream – for people who have had a stroke, acquired brain injury (ABI) or who have other neurological conditions; and
-
Functional Enhancement Stream – for individuals who have physically deteriorated after surgery, illness and/or long hospital stays.
-
Augmentative and Alternative Communication Clinic – A clinic to address communication challenges experienced by people with acquired brain injury, stroke or Parkinson’s disease.
Our interprofessional health care team works with individuals and their families to develop an individualized treatment plan that reflects their goals, needs and ability to participate. We focus on superior outcomes for each and every patient.
Most rehabilitation programs involve daily therapy. In Low Tolerance Long Duration, therapy is provided for a shorter period several days a week. On the other days, team members help patients practice the skills they learn in therapy. Family and friends can also provide this support. Patients stay at Toronto Rehab for up to four months.
