Rehabilitation
 |
Physical therapy begins very soon after surgery.
During the first day or two, therapy begins with some simple exercises done in bed. Over the next few days, individuals will learn how to walk with a walker or a cane.
Most people who have had an uncomplicated knee or hip replacement are sent home to recover. They may have some physical and occupational therapy at home from the local Community Care Access Centre (CCAC). Or they may travel to a rehabilitation clinic or hospital for rehabilitation as an outpatient. |
Some people may come to a rehabilitation hospital, like Toronto Rehab, to continue their therapy as an inpatient. This is more likely if they have other health issues.
Rehabilitation at Toronto Rehab
Individuals who come to Toronto Rehab for rehabilitation will likely be here for up to seven days depending on their recovery.
Our interdisciplinary team works with patients to:
-
Increase their independence through walking, exercise and safely doing daily activities.
-
Check the incision and monitor their overall health.
-
Manage their pain.
-
Teach them how to use any devices they need (cane, walker, cushion, etc.)
-
Help them prepare for their return home.
Getting Back to Normal
Individuals may need to use a walker or cane for a few weeks (or longer) after surgery.
If surgery and rehabilitation go well, individuals should be able to do most normal activities by the end of three months. The hip or knee pain that led to the surgery should no longer be a problem.
Full recovery after joint replacement surgery usually takes at least six months.
Toronto Rehab has developed a free, detailed booklet to provide individuals with more information and tips to help in recovery and rehabilitation.
