Getting Ready/Surgery
Joint replacement surgery is usually scheduled far in advance. That provides time to plan ahead for surgery, recovery and rehabilitation.
What should you expect after your surgery?
The first day or two after surgery are spent recovering from surgery itself. Then the focus shifts to learning to use the new joint properly.
Here are some of the things individuals should expect after hip or knee replacement surgery.
Pain and swelling
As your incision (cut) heals and you get used to living with your new joint, the joint pain you had before your surgery should start to improve or disappear.
Your care after surgery
-
A physical therapist will suggest simple exercises for you to do in bed during the first day or two.
-
Most people are encouraged to get out of bed the day after surgery with help from their family or friends.
-
Over the next few days, a therapist will teach you to walk with a walker or cane.
-
Your physiotherapist will give you a personalized therapy program. You will need to continue this program after discharge.
-
Most people go home within a few days to a week after surgery. If you are discharged home after your surgery, the local Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) will help you and your family with information and support at home.
-
People who need more therapy are more likely to come to a rehabilitation hospital like Toronto Rehab.
-
Toronto Rehab has developed a free, detailed booklet to provide individuals with information and helpful tips. It includes suggestions of things to do to prepare for the surgery.
