Neurology Service

The Neurology Service is an outpatient assessment program for people who have a head, brain or neck injury – often caused by a work-related accident. Their injury may be causing them cognitive, physical, psychiatric or social problems.

The fee for this service is usually covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board or insurance programs.

Assessments are made by a team of different rehab specialists based on the needs of the individual. These usually take place over a one to two week period. Where necessary, referrals can be made for diagnostic tests or consultations, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ear, nose and throat (ENT) evaluations.

Most individuals who are being assessed are able to carry out activities of daily living. However, if 24-hour support is needed during assessment, an inpatient bed can be arranged.

Based on the assessment, the team will make recommendations regarding:
  • further medical and/or psychiatric treatment

  • psychosocial management

  • community re-integration, or

  • returning to work.

A return-to-work coordinator is also available to provide services to help individuals to return to work in a safe and timely manner.
