Course Description
This is a post-Advanced level clinical course designed for clinicians with significant clinical experience - and who often mentor students and/or clinical colleagues - working with individuals with acquired neurological dysfunction, and who have a specific interest(s) in advancing their clinical understanding and clinical reasoning.
The applicant to this demanding, intensive, first-of-it's-kind-in-Canada course will commit to preparing a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation to be presented during the course to fellow participants (max. 10) as well as the instructor, detailing a specific clinical problem and it's underlying neurophysiological basis. Further, the applicant will agree to reviewing and critiqueing pre-course selected readings and be able to discuss these during the course in the context of clinical hypothesis development and clinical reasoning.
The participant will be invited to bring a patient volunteer for daily supervised patient treatment sessions, however where impractical, a patient will be provided. Lectures, guided discussions, individual presentations and practical exploration will complete this 5 day intensive program.
The course registration is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. As the program includes practical components, participants must have appropriate clothing, i.e. shorts, tank top, sports bra (female).
Course Objectives
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- To improve the observational skills of the participant and assist in translating observations into hypothesis.
- To be able to clinically reason the hypothesis and formulate a treatment plan.
- To improve the participant's use of novel and innovative ways to change impairment.
- To be able to say what the carry over should be and evaluate it appropriately.
- To develop the participant's confidence in teaching new clinical skills.
Course Schedule
8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. registration on the first day with class from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. for the rest of the course
A certificate cannot be provided if non-attendance >1 hour. As well, all pre-course required work must be done to the satisfaction of the instructor.
Instructor’s biography
Mary Lynch-Ellerington is a Fellow of the CSP and a Senior Instructor in IBITA. Trained at Bradford School of Physiotherapy, she qualified in November 1973 as the winner of the Jean Brock award. She worked at the world famous Bobath Centre London from 1979 to 1991 with Dr K and Mrs B Bobath. She teaches courses worldwide at all levels and is an associate of Leeds Metropolitan University on The MSc in The Bobath Concept. She also has a private practice in York. Mary has written 2 books:
- Strokes and Head Injuries in 1991
- Bobath Concept: Theory and Clinical Practice in Neurological Rehabilitation in 2009
Tuition and Payment
The fee for this 5-day course is: $1395 CDN
All tuition fees must be paid in Canadian dollars. Tuition includes course reference materials and refreshments and snacks during the morning and afternoon breaks. Lunch will not be provided. There is a cafeteria on site where you can purchase a lunch as well as a kitchen where you can store your own lunch.
Insurance and Licensing: it is the individual responsibility of the participant to be properly licensed and insured.
Waiver: All participants (and patient volunteers) must sign a waiver releasing Toronto Rehabilitation Institute from any liability.
Course Pre-requisites
- minimum 5 years clinical experience in neurological rehabilitation (acute, post-acute or chronic)
- current position involves at least 50% clinical work
- uccessful, certificated completion of Basic 3 week Bobath (or NDT) course
- successful, certificated completion of no fewer than 2 Advanced Bobath (or NDT) courses

At the end of the registration process you will be offered three payment options:
- payment by credit card (Visa and Master Card are accepted)
- payment by cheque (the cheque has to be received within two weeks from the date you registered) The cheque should be made to the order of Toronto Rehabilitation Institute
- pay later – this option is only available to Toronto Rehab employees that are paying with a transfer of founds.
You will need to fax or scan the following documents to Conference Services:
- photocopies of pre-requisite course certificates
- CV, to include all courses previously taken
- signed statement verifying current position is 50% + clinical and that you commit to doing all required pre-course assignments, e.g. preparation of selected readings and PowerPoint presentation
- copy of Ontario license

Notification of acceptance/ non-acceptance: April 30, 2010
All applicants will be contacted via e-mail with an answer: accepted, declined or placed on waiting list. The e-mails will be sent out on April 30, 2010.

If you are not accepted, the paid registration fee will be fully reimbursed.
Registration is completed once payment is received. All payments must be submitted by April 23, 2010.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be received in writing and all refunds are subject to a $75.00 administrative fee. After April 23, 2010, and in the event that a replacement cannot be found, no refunds will be granted.
