Course Description
Since 1983, the Physiotherapy Department at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (formerly The Queen Elizabeth Hospital) has sponsored a variety of NeuroDevelopmental Treatment (NDT) courses.
This year, we will again offer the NDT/Bobath Certificate Course in the Management and Treatment of Adults with Hemiplegia. Successful completion of this 16-day course provides eligibility to apply for the NDTA™ Certification Program.
Course Objectives
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Gain an understanding of NDT/Bobath principles. Improve their ability to analyze typical and atypical movement.
- Apply NDT/Bobath therapeutic handling strategies and techniques to individuals with neuromotor disorders.
- Identify the relationship between participation restriction, functional activity limitations, ineffective posture and movement and impairments in individuals with neuromotor disorders.
- Integrate this approach to management with concepts of neuroplasticity, recovery of function and motor learning theory.
- Develop and demonstrate therapeutic handling strategies and skills necessary to improve the individual’s sensorimotor performance and overall functional abilities.
Course Format
Course format will include lectures, patient demonstrations and treatment, and laboratory practice sessions. Patient demonstrations will be presented by the instructors. Participants will have laboratory sessions to practice various hands-on intervention strategies. Participants will also treat patients with guidance from the instructors.
Course Schedule
8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. registration on the first day with class from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for the rest of the course
Instructors’ Biographical Information
Karen Brunton B.Sc. PT is a Physiotherapist and Clinical Educator at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. She holds a Lecturer status appointment with the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Toronto. Karen is NDT trained in both adults and pediatrics. She has over 30 years experience working with clients with neurological impairments in acute, rehabilitation, long term care and outpatient settings. Karen has been an NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor in Adult Hemiplegia since 1991, Advanced Course Instructor since 1996 and an instructor with IBITA (International Bobath Instructor Training Association) since 1997. Karen has taught courses throughout Canada, the United States as well as in Jamaica and Mexico. In addition, Karen has presented on various topics at NDTA™ National Conferences, Ontario Physiotherapy Conferences and Canadian Physiotherapy Congress.
Karen Guha, B.Sc., PT is a Physiotherapist in the Kitchener/Waterloo area. She works at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener and treats private clients at Back Works Spinal and Sports Rehabilitation in Waterloo. She graduated from the University of Toronto, in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. She completed her NDT Certificate course in 1999 and has taken numerous other Advanced NDT courses. Karen began teaching as an NDTA™ Instructor Candidate in 2002, completed her training to become a PT Instructor in 2007 and a Coordinator Instructor, Adult Hemiplegia in 2011. She has taught introductory, intermediate, advanced and certificate NDT courses in Canada, the United States and internationally. She has nearly 15 years experience working with adults with neurological impairments in acute, rehabilitation, and outpatient settings.

Tuition and Payment
The fee for this 16-day course is:
$2,900.00 CDN for NDTA Members
$3,170.00 CDN for non-NDTA Members
Tuition includes course reference materials, a lab manual and refreshments. Lunch is not included. All tuition fees must be paid in Canadian dollars. Outside of Canada, please obtain a bank draft in Canadian funds at your bank.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be received in writing and all refunds are subject to a $75.00 administrative fee. After September 6, 2012 and in the event that a replacement cannot be found, no refunds will be granted.
Course Requirements
Participants must be qualified Physical or Occupational Therapists, or Speech-Language Pathologists, with a minimum of one-year's experience following graduation, and be presently working with adults with neurological impairments.
Application and Registration
Registration will open soon. In order for your application to be completed, you will need to submit the following documents:
- Completed Application
- Reason for Course Application
- Letter of Recommendation
- Copy of Current License
- Proof of Current Malpractice Insurance
- Proof of NDTA membership if applicable, so you can qualify for the lower tuition rate
At the end of the registration process you will be offered three payment options:
- payment by credit card (Visa and Master Card are accepted)
- payment by cheque (the cheque has to be received within two weeks from the date you registered) The cheque should be made to the order of Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.
- pay later – this option is only available to Toronto Rehab employees that are paying with a transfer of funds.

Notification of acceptance/ non-acceptance: August 30, 2012 or before (depending on the date of your application)
All applicants will be contacted via e-mail with an answer: accepted, declined or placed on waiting list. The e-mails will be sent out at the latest on August 30, 2012. Please reply back right away to confirm your participation.
If you are not accepted, the paid registration fee will be fully reimbursed.
Registration is completed once payment is received. All payments must be submitted by August 20, 2012.
