Course Description
This introduction to the management of adults with neurological dysfunction due to CVA or traumatic brain injury is based upon the principles and philosophy of the Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) approach. The course utilizes lecture, lab and patient treatment demonstration to teach participants a wide range of practical handling skills. This course is open ONLY to PT and OT Assistants who work directly under the supervision of PTs and OTs who have previously taken an NDT Certificate Course in the Treatment of Individuals with CVA. The course will give assistants a knowledge base for understanding normal movement and some basic handling skills to then contribute to the overall team rehabilitation efforts and consistency in patient care.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants will:
- State the basic philosophy underlying the NDT approach to the treatment of adults with neurological dysfunction
- Demonstrate an understanding of movement, both normal and abnormal, during sitting and standing activities and some transitions
- Apply components of normal movement when assisting a patient in functional activities
- Apply, with direction and guidance from a PT or OT, basic handling skills to enhance patient’s functional movement as related to his/her functional goals
Course Format
Course format will include lectures and patient demonstrations by the instructor. A major portion of the course will involve laboratory practice sessions. Participants during lab sessions will have the opportunity to analyze normal movement and practice handling skills to facilitate functional movement patterns in normal adults during sitting/standing activities and transitions.
