IPE Placements

IPE Placement Goals

Toronto Rehab's IPE placement program enables students to meet their clinical placement requirements while also participating in an IPE placement. IPE placement goals are for students to:

  • develop an increased understanding of the expertise that each profession brings to solving health problems including team members’ roles and responsibilities in providing patient care;
  • learn and collectively develop clinical expertise together;
  • build a critical understanding of team functioning within the context of a collaborative team.
Who may participate?

Students from Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Speech Language Pathology, Therapeutic Recreation and other professions (including non-clinical roles) may take part in IPE placements.

IPE Placement Description

IPE placements usually run four to five weeks and include four elements:
  1. Learners are placed on a common unit or area
  2. Everyone attends an introductory tutorial and weekly patient-themed discussion tutorials
  3. Learners prepare and deliver a joint presentation
  4. IPE facilitators guide the learning process

Weekly Tutorials

Students will meet in facilitated tutorials throughout their clinical experience. They will take leadership in exploring learning issues pertaining to their clinical experience, the health system, and the delivery of health care services within the team. They will also discuss issues related to interprofessional roles and collaborative practice. Exploration of interprofessional learning opportunities (e.g. shadowing) beyond tutorial discussions will be encouraged.

Wrap-up and Presentation

At the end of their placement, students will have a final tutorial session to evaluate their experience, bring together their new knowledge and personal reflections.
