Toronto Rehab-UHN Integration

On Monday, April 4, 2011, Toronto Rehab announced with University Health Network (UHN) a proposed integration that will see Toronto Rehab join Toronto General, Toronto Western and Princess Margaret Hospitals as the newest member of the UHN family.

The Boards of Directors of the two organizations approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to begin the integration process. A Joint Steering Committee comprised of Toronto Rehab and UHN Directors and the CEOs of both organizations has been created to oversee the development of an integration plan.  Ultimately, the decision to proceed rests with both hospital Boards which will be asked to review and approve an integration agreement sometime in June. The agreement must then be approved by the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

The proposed integration of our hospital with UHN is the next logical step in Toronto Rehab’s evolution as it realizes its full potential as an academic health sciences centre and a leader in post acute care. By joining with our largest referring partner, we will be able to realize many of the ambitious objectives outlined in our strategic plan while making the best possible use of increasingly scarce resources.
  • It’s better for patients and patient outcomes
We will be able to initiate rehabilitation much sooner in the treatment process and ensure greater continuity of care through the different stages of recovery, ensuring better quality of care, better patient experiences and better access to and timeliness of health services across the entire continuum.
  • It’s better for research and discovery
We will be able to expand our rehabilitation research program and partner with a range of highly skilled clinical teams who share our commitment to develop new and more effective treatment approaches through scientific discovery.
  • It’s better for student education and team development
We will be able to provide a wider range of disciplines with exceptional learning experiences, allowing us to continue to deliver care in an interprofessional manner and broaden both the membership and expertise of treatment teams to improve patient outcomes.
Over the next few months, the two hospitals will complete their due diligence and work together to develop an integration plan. Throughout this integration process, Toronto Rehab remains dedicated to advancing our mission and our vision to revolutionize rehabilitation and maximize life for our patients and families through the provision of quality health care services.
